At the beginning of a fungal life is the spore, which corresponds to the seed produced by plants. Under the right environmental conditions, spores release tiny strands of tissue called hyphae. When two compatible hyphae from different spores meet, they fuse and form a mycelium whose cell nuclei contain information from both parents. As a result, this organism is able to reproduce itself. Initially, the fungus forms tiny fruiting bodies, also known as pinheads because of their pinhead-like appearance. These grow into a mushroom body with a closed cap. Once the hat has fully opened, growth is complete. The spores are then released (sporulation) and the cycle begins again.

Mushrooms are optimally adapted to their natural environment. They have learned to assert themselves against the local bacteria and competing fungi. How sensitive they really are only becomes apparent when you bring them into an unfamiliar environment. In your home they deal with completely different microorganisms than in the forest or on the meadow. As a rule, they are hopelessly inferior to these, which is why sterility is essential for mushroom cultivation.

Drying and storing the magic mushrooms

You can only keep freshly harvested magic mushrooms in the fridge for a few days. Thorough drying is required for long-term storage. To do this, place the mushrooms on a paper towel. If it gets wet, replace it. Store the mushrooms in a warm, dark place during this time. Once the magic mushrooms are dry, you can pack them airtight. Stored in a cool, dry, dark place, they will keep for at least a year or two.

You can also freeze the mushrooms after drying. Just put them in a freezer bag, seal it airtight and put it in the freezer. Magic mushrooms stored in this way last almost indefinitely.

Caution: Never freeze fresh magic mushrooms. This would destroy their cell membrane structure and significantly lower their potency.

When and how often can you harvest?

Pick the ripe mushrooms and give the rest some time to develop. If a mushroom is not yet ripe but is growing out of the stem of another mushroom that’s already ripe, better pick both. Before picking you should wash your hands thoroughly and rinse with clean water or use disposable latex gloves. In the best case scenario, disinfect your hands beforehand. You can start harvesting when the skin between the head and stem begins to peel off.

Very important: The heads of the mushrooms contain spores. As soon as the skin tears between the head and the trunk, the spores fall down. These falling spores cover the small surrounding mushrooms with a layer of black powder. Covered mushrooms stop growing because the light can no longer be absorbed. Therefore harvest these mushrooms beforehand! Detach the mushrooms from the substrate by holding the stem by the lower end and carefully and slowly turning it clockwise until it loosens. Never pull the mushroom out of the substrate, you risk damaging the mycelium and endanger future harvests. Never cut the mushrooms inside the grow box with a knife or other object. This will lead to contamination! As long as the grow box is producing mushrooms, you should harvest the mushrooms.

How should beginners take magic mushrooms?

It is best to take magic mushrooms on an empty stomach or at least six hours after your last meal. To mask their unpleasant taste, you can mix them with yogurt, chocolate, or other products. It is important to start with small doses and only increase them slowly.

It is not recommended to mix magic mushrooms with other psychoactive substances. Cannabis does get along very well with psilocybin. However, it is advisable to use magic mushrooms individually first in order to properly discover and appreciate their effects.

How are magic mushrooms dosed?

With the right dosage, you ensure that the effect is not too intense. Keep in mind that everyone's reaction to shrooms is different, and the same amount of the same species can result in different experiences for different consumers. For example, please note:

• the body weight,
• tolerance to psychoactive substances,
• the general state of health and the history of the disease,

• mild trip: 9 grams of fresh or 1 gram of dried mushrooms,
• normal trip: 21 grams fresh 2 grams dried mushrooms,
• intense trip: 35 grams of fresh or 3.5 grams of dried mushrooms.

If you're a beginner, start with lower-psilocybin Mexican or Thai mushrooms. These don't cause an intense trip compared to the McKennaii.
